Is Anxiety Making Your World Small?

Anxiety can be a mild inconvenience but also sometimes a stressful debilitation.  Whether anxiety shows up as stress, frustration, worry, irritability, anger, or tiredness, the experience often precipitates negative thoughts and other upsetting emotions.  It can eventually become difficult to maintain a thoughtful and calm composure when your nervous system is quickly triggered into a “fight or flight” response.  At this point, when your body becomes hijacked with anxiety, it can become overwhelmingly difficult to manage day-to-day life.  It is not uncommon for an individual to suffer a loss of confidence when anxiety has taken root.  Anxiety or fear-based decision-making promotes “safety-seeking” behaviours which can eventually alienate a person from others and even themselves.  When anxiety goes unaddressed, an individual’s world becomes small, living is replaced by surviving, and this can sometimes trigger depression.  Working through anxieties and recognizing how they manifest in daily life is key to re-establishing life and confidence in oneself.

What Is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a psychological and physiological mechanism through which the body communicates its needs.  When a person feels anxious, this corresponds to a physical, emotional, or social need.  Anxiety can however become out of touch with its corresponding need and become confusing and unmanageable.  Anxiety can become an intense and chronic experience and can be diagnosed as a “mental disorder”.  It affects individuals of all ages.  It can present itself in physical habits, overstimulating thoughts, or excessive worries. Individuals living with anxiety may experience situations where their emotions or thoughts become overwhelming. This can trigger a “fight or flight” response, increasing the intensity of anxious thoughts and feelings, and then creating a cumulative spiral that may lead to panic.  When thinking about anxiety, it is important to keep in mind that both physical and emotional manifestations may arise. This makes it increasingly difficult to pinpoint how and why an individual may be experiencing anxiety. Common symptoms of anxiety include:

  • A change in sleeping or eating patterns

  • Feelings of impending doom or danger in situations where no threat is present

  • Difficulty concentrating on tasks at hand

  • Increasing feelings of fatigue, stress, or irritability

  • Physical pains: muscle tension, nervous system dysregulation, and digestion issues

  • Escalated heart rates and irregular breathing when anxiety is triggered
